Although the holidays can be fun and magical, they also come with a significant dose of pressure—especially if you’re a parent. In between all the normal daily to-dos, you’re also trying to find time to decorate, pick out gifts, and set aside time for carrying out family traditions.

When you’re newly divorced or separated, that last bit can be particularly challenging. Trying to recreate all the old feelings, following the old schedule, and using the old ways of celebrating can feel like it’s too heavy with grief and old memories—not to mention impossible if those traditions involved your ex’s family or other elements that are now out-of-reach.

So instead of trying to recreate what used to be, why not try something totally new? Not only will this be healthier for you in the long run, it also gives you a chance to reshape the holiday season into something that you truly love and enjoy.

Having a good working relationship with your co-pa

Having a good working relationship with your co-parent is probably the single most important thing you can do to help your kids exist at two homes with as little turmoil as possible.
Your kids will vary as to how well they handle the situation at all…some may be able to make it work seemingly easily, others may really struggle every time it’s time to switch. Patience and grace are important for them while they learn and adjust to this new routine.

If Dad is always putting the girlfriend first, your kids know it. It can be small things like always including her in activities that your kids thought were just with Dad. Or, it can be the girlfriend picking them up at a custody exchange, instead of Dad. It can be bigger things, too, like making the kids sleep at the girlfriends’ house, or meeting her family. Ideally, your ex should discuss all this with you beforehand--but oftentimes, he won’t.

So, hold space for their feelings. This means you allow them to tell you their feelings, and you respond with ‘tell me more about how that felt’ instead of ‘Daddy shouldn't do that to you! I’m calling my lawyer!’ [though you can think that all you want]. This is not a dirt-seeking mission, nor should it be used as one. It is being curious about your kids’ feelings and understanding of the situation. It is letting them know you are there for them, that you love them, and that they can always talk to you. That’s what it’s about.
